Sticking to a strict keto diet can seem difficult enough when you have your own stocked kitchen at your disposal, but when you are traveling, whether for work or pleasure, sticking to your high-fat, low-carb diet is an even bigger challenge. From searching for the right snacks to scouring for keto-friendly eating places, your vacation can easily end up becoming a dietary nightmare.
Fortunately, there are ways in which you can avoid that. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Carry keto-friendly snacks
Depending on your destination, you may or may not find keto snacks. It is best if you pack some for the trip so that you can munch on them whenever hunger strikes. Make sure that you carry non-perishable snacks such as cheese crisps, nuts and jerky so that you can store them for a long time.
2. Do some research
Before your trip, find restaurants and cafes that serve keto-friendly food at your destination. Websites such as Yelp and TripAdvisor can be helpful. You can also call the hotel or resort that you are planning to stay at and get menu information for their restaurants or get local recommendations. Having a gameplan beforehand will help prevent the overwhelm of trying to find a keto friendly restaurant after you are already hungry!
3. Try intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting will help with ketosis by reducing the number of times you eat. You can now eat only one or two large meals a day and not have to bother about going around looking for the right food. It reduces the amount of planning and research you have to do in advance. This will also help you cut down on junk food by avoiding the free airplane pretzels or cookies
4. Try to book your stay at a place with a kitchen
This may not always be a feasible option but if you can do it, it is a great help in staying on track with your keto diet. With an increase in the number of services like Airbnb, it has become easier to find accommodations with a kitchen. You don’t necessarily have to cook all your meals, but having a kitchen helps make it easier to avoid the temptation of eating out and slipping up.
