Six questions you need to reflect on before exploring Keto

This diet has taken the world by storm over the past years.

It has been trending and a way of life for a lot of people.

Before you dive into this new journey here are a few questions you may want to ask yourself before plunging in.

  1. Can you handle a lot of limitations?

This diet is very restrictive, products such as bread, pasta, rice, and some dairy and veggie products are too high in carbohydrates to fit into these limitations.

You may find this difficult if your household is not under this diet or if you usually travel and engage in a lot of socializing that requires you to dine out.

  1. Does it fit your budget?

The keto diet can be pricey, shopping a cart full of low carb veggies, avocados, meat, eggs and butter may generate a large bill.

  1. Are you willing to tolerate the side effects?

The transition in adapting to ketosis can be challenging.

Your body may be affected by the ‘keto flu’ which has symptoms such as headaches, brain fog, constipation, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. While these side effects will eventually fade away, the first few days may be challenging.

  1. Is the amount of sleep you are getting enough?

The keto diet requires the body to get quality sleep, some factors of this diet may cause you to have a short or disruptive sleep and may not be appropriate for you.

  1. What is your plan after Keto?

The Keto diet is only generally recommended for a maximum of six to twelve months.

After this time frame, you would need to transition out of Ketosis.

At this point, you would need to devise a plan for continuing a healthy eating pattern and avoiding regaining the weight you lost.

  1. Are you able to consult with an Expert?

Under this diet, it would be best if you can consult with a dietician to guide you to make sure that it is done safely. It is strongly recommended to do this Keto Diet under careful consultation.

If you are willing and ready to consider all of the above, then the Ketogenic diet is a good plan for you. It is always recommended to get approval from your doctor or even better a dietician to tailor a diet plan for you.
