What is the Ketogenic Diet?

The keto or ketogenic diet is a low carb, high fat diet. It has many benefits including turning our bodies into fat burning machines- so awesome, right?

So here’s how it works.

Normally, when we digest carbohydrates our body turns those carbohydrates into glucose, our body’s primary energy source on a high carbohydrate diet. This increase in glucose triggers our body to produce insulin, which allows the glucose to either be used for energy or stored as fat.

When we restrict our intake of carbohydrates over a period of time, our body no longer has this glucose and insulin response team. But our bodies are miraculously adaptable and respond by producing ketones in the liver as a source for energy. Once ketones are the primary source of energy, our body goes into a state of ketosis, This state turns our body into a fat burning machine instead of a carbohydrate burning machine. How awesome is that?!

So will restricting carbohydrates for one meal turn our bodies into a state of ketosis? It is unlikely. Our bodies need to be starved of carbohydrates for a period of time for ketosis to occur. It depends how long for every person, but one can normally tell by how their urine smells.

When I cycle through the ketogenic diet, my body normally turns into a state of ketosis within 3-4 days. Getting our bodies into a state of ketosis has many health benefits including weight loss, reduced blood sugar levels, mental clarity, increased energy levels. It is also used medically to treat infant patients with epilepsy. It also starves cancerous tumors since glucose is the primary source of fuel for tumors. Click here for a scholarly article.
